Funding comes from the Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) this week announced a funding opportunity for $60 million in grants to fund new technologies that improve transportation systems.

The funding comes from the Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program (ATCMTD), which has different focus areas each year. This year for the first time, the focus includes racial equity, environmental justice, and access to opportunity, FHWA says. The program can also support electric vehicle charging and other technologies that help reduce emissions.

“These grants encourage the use of cutting-edge technologies that will make transportation greener and improve access to jobs and other opportunities for the public,” Acting Federal Highway Administrator Stephanie Pollack said in a statement.

Established under the FAST Act, the goal of the ATCMTD program is to improve the performance of U.S. transportation systems, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the safety of the traveling public. Since 2016, the program has provided more than $256 million for projects in 25 states and the District of Columbia.

FHWA says the ATCMTD program provides funding to help states, local governments, transit agencies, and metropolitan planning organizations install advanced technologies at large scale that can serve as national models and improve safety and reduce travel times for drivers and transit riders.
