Equipment Notebook: Updated Excavators and Loaders Bring Power and Precision
This installment of Roads & Bridge’s Equipment Notebook highlights two significant updates from manufacturers focused on helping contractors tackle demanding worksites more efficiently.
Yanmar is delivering a powerful, operator-focused redesign of its largest mini excavators, while John Deere is rolling out advanced diagnostics and job-ready enhancements across its P-Tier wheel loader lineup.
Yanmar Redesigns ViO80-7 and SV100-7 Mini Excavators
Yanmar Compact Equipment North America has introduced the next generation of its ViO80 and SV100 mini excavators, bringing enhanced performance, comfort and digital capabilities to the company’s largest mini models.
Designed for work in utility, construction, demolition and landscaping, the ViO80-7 and SV100-7 are targeted to meet the needs of fleet managers and contractors who regularly operate in tight spaces without compromising on breakout force or digging depth.
The 18,122-pound ViO80-7 features an upgraded 67-horsepower Tier 4 Final diesel engine that delivers 18% more power than the previous model. Its larger sibling, the 21,385-pound SV100-7, includes a 72-horsepower engine and reaches a maximum dig depth of 14 feet, 11 inches.
Both machines support a 20% increase in PTO flow, providing better attachment compatibility and performance across a variety of tasks.
Tailored for job sites with minimal clearance, the ViO80-7 retains Yanmar’s zero tail-swing design, allowing it to rotate flush with structures. The SV100-7 adds an ultra-tight tail swing with minimal overhang—ideal for confined spaces like urban developments or utility corridors.
Performance enhancements continue with the addition of Yanmar’s 2-Pump Load Sensing (2PLS) hydraulic system, which automatically adjusts pump flow under heavy loads to maintain consistent operation. The result is smoother control during complex maneuvers and better fuel efficiency. The excavators also feature a floating blade function for easier grading and surface finishing.
Inside the cab, operators will find increased space, a new suspension seat and more ergonomic foot pedals. The machines include wider cab glass for improved sight lines, reduced cabin noise, automatic climate control, and multiple USB ports for convenience on the job.
On the technology side, the excavators are equipped with a 7-inch color LCD monitor offering features like PTO flow adjustments, Auto-Decel mode, and passcode security. Rearview and right-side cameras come standard, while an optional 360-degree Surround View camera system enhances situational awareness for safer operation in high-traffic or cluttered worksites.
Yanmar’s SmartAssist Remote telematics system is included for five years on qualifying models. The system allows remote monitoring of location, maintenance needs, error codes and usage statistics. Theft protection capabilities let owners define an operating range or active time window, with alerts triggered if the machine is moved unexpectedly.
John Deere Updates P-Tier Wheel Loaders
John Deere has upgraded its 524, 544 and 624 P-Tier Wheel Loaders with a suite of technology enhancements and operator-centric refinements designed to streamline daily workflow, increase safety and reduce downtime. The latest updates build on the durability and versatility of the P-Tier platform with added intelligence and productivity tools.
The updated models now include a new 7-inch touchscreen display that replaces most physical buttons and supports multi-functionality. Operators can run two applications at once—such as a rear camera feed and diagnostic readouts—without switching screens. In-base rear camera views are now standard, and an optional G5 secondary display allows for further customization and expanded operator control.
Deere’s Ready to Run system includes advanced diagnostics accessible through the display, covering daily fluid level checks, fluid loss detection and battery health monitoring. These tools help reduce unplanned downtime and allow fleet managers to schedule maintenance more efficiently.
A key mechanical enhancement is the QuadCool Cooling System. Redesigned rear hoods and side-access panels provide better access for cleaning and routine maintenance, while a reverse fan system clears debris from critical areas. The relocated axle cooling system is easier to service, and the independently opening rear door adds further convenience.
Safety and awareness also take a step forward with SmartDetect, a factory-installed, camera-based detection system that identifies people and objects near the machine. Visual and audible alerts notify the operator of hazards on the in-cab display, helping to prevent accidents and improve situational awareness.
The updated loaders are also equipped with redesigned high-strength steel buckets featuring extended lips that increase capacity by approximately 5%, allowing operators to move more material per pass and improve overall efficiency.
