Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., has received federal certification on a second engine using the company's new emission reduction technology.

Cat said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certified the C7 engine, which uses the Advanced Combustion Emission Reduction Technology (ACERT).

"The certification demonstrates that Caterpillar is fully on schedule with the introduction of ACERT technology," said James Parker, Caterpillar vice president in the Power Systems Marketing Division.

The C7 engine succeeds Caterpillar's 3126E engine and will be in full production in June.

"This engine is a mid-range engine, more suited for regional uses instead of cross-country uses," said spokesman Carl Volz.

Caterpillar received EPA certification of the C9 engine, the first engine using ACERT, in January. That engine is for larger vehicles, such as vocational class trucks.

All Caterpillar on-highway truck and bus engines will be equipped with ACERT technology by the fourth quarter of this year, the company said.
