Work on the Eglinton Crosstown light-rail transit (LRT) project is set to make a major step forward, as tunnel boring machines, named Don and Humber, respectively, will begin their journey westward, starting from the launch shaft located east of Brentcliffe Road and proceeding towards Yonge Street.
Work on the western segment of the tunnel has been underway since June 2013 with 4.0 of the 6.5 kilometers already complete. All tunneling work is expected to be finished by the end of 2016.
The Eglinton Crosstown LRT will be in service by September 2021 and will include 19 kilometers (11 miles) of light-rail transit along Eglinton Ave., including 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) underground between Keele Street and Laird Drive, and 25 stations and stops linking to bus routes, three subway stations and various GO Transit lines.
