At an open house held on Wednesday by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), state officials unveiled plans to replace Interstate 375 in Detroit with a lower-speed boulevard.
MDOT's plan calls to replace the sunken I-375 freeway in downtown Detroit that runs between Interstate 75 and Jefferson Avenue with a six-lane boulevard at city street level and a four-lane boulevard between Jefferson Avenue and Atwater Street. The plan also calls for the existing I-75/I-375 interchange to be rebuilt with a smaller footprint.
According to officials, the project is set to begin in 2025. It has been in talks since 2013.
According to MDOT, the project has passed the environmental review and is entering the early design phase.
The project is set to cost $300 million in Detroit's Eastern Market.
State officials announced last September that Michigan was receiving $104.6 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to help with the project. The rest of the price tag will be paid by state and federal funding.
