Utah DOT announces top 10 construction projects scheduled for 2020

April 20, 2020

The department says it is keeping its operations moving forward during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Utah DOT (UDOT) recently announced its top construction projects for 2020, which are selected for their regional significance, level of community interest, and benefit to state residents.

UDOT has more than 220 construction projects statewide that are currently in progress or scheduled to start this year, with a combined investment of nearly $3.3 billion.

This year’s No. 1 project is a reconstruction and widening of U.S. 89 between Farmington and I-84. Crews will add a new lane in both directions and replace all of the existing intersections with four new interchanges and two underpasses along a 9.5-mile section of the highway.

Due to the essential nature of building and maintaining the state’s transportation system, UDOT says it is committed to keeping its operations moving forward during the COVID-19 pandemic. UDOT says its ongoing social distancing efforts for crews in the field, the outdoor environment in which much of the department’s work takes place, and other proactive controls the department is implementing will help ensure a safe workplace and reduce the impact of COVID-19 on its employees and operations.

“Transportation is vital in providing essential goods and services during these uncertain times and will continue to be a major part of our economic recovery in the coming months,” UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras said in a statement. “These construction jobs are deemed essential in order to keep Utah moving.”

UDOT's top 10 projects for 2020 include:

  • U.S. 89 Farmington to I-8—Davis and Weber counties, $489 million
  • Bangerter Highway Three Interchanges—Salt Lake County, $222 million
  • I-15 Northbound—Salt Lake County, $163 million
  • Midvalley Highway—Tooele County, $70 million
  • I-15 Express Lanes—Davis and Weber counties, $169 million
  • Southern Parkway (S.R. 7)—Washington County, $75 million
  • 5600 West S.R. 201 to I-80—Salt Lake County, $83 million
  • I-15 Juab County to Sevier River—Juab County, $15 million
  • U.S. 191 North Moab to Colorado River Bridge—Grand County, $31 million
  • I-80 S.R. 201 to S.R. 36 Auxiliary Lane—Tooele County, $6 million

In addition to these Top 10 projects, the department says construction continues on a number of major projects across the state, such as the I-15 Technology Corridor in Lehi, the Mountain View Corridor extension in West Valley City, the I-15 Southbound project in Salt Lake County, and the U.S. 40 passing lane project in Wasatch County.
