Several vehicles were struck by falling concrete debris this morning on U.S. 169 at the 46th Street North bridge in northeast Tulsa, Okla.
The incident started when a woman lost control of her pickup truck on the wet roadway and crashed into the side of the bridge. The impact caused chucks of concrete to fall from the bridge onto U.S. 169 below.
The falling concrete damaged three vehicles on U.S. 169. One 20-lb chunk of concrete fell through the windshield of an SUV and struck the driver in the chest. The 65-year-old man was taken to nearby St. John Medical Center in serious condition.
Crews from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Tulsa Police Department arrived at the scene and closed all lanes of 46th Street North as well as the affected southbound lanes of U.S. 169, diverting traffic using the 46th Street North on- and off-ramps.
At last report, the ODOT crew was working to repair the bridge and clean up the debris.
