Stainless steel–long used for bridge expansion joints, concrete reinforcement, and other less visible components–is becoming recognized as a practical choice for bridge structural sections. This webinar will highlight the iconic San Diego Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge project, which uses 2205 duplex stainless steel from Outokumpu as a primary structural component. Outokumpu, a leading producer of stainless steel, presents a panel of experts in the area of bridge design and/or material selection. The webinar will feature individuals who helped to make the San Diego pedestrian bridge a reality including representatives from the materials selection team (TMR Stainless), lead design engineering firm (T.Y. Lin International), and fabricator (AMECO USA). The webinar will also discuss the rapidly expanding role of stainless rebar in extending the life of bridge projects with coastal or deicing salt exposure.

Catherine Houska is an internationally recognized stainless steel architectural and construction consultant providing structural engineers, architects, and other decision makers with new project and forensic assistance. She has authored over 148 articles, papers, and technical brochures, and is a frequent national and international conference and workshop speaker. She also consults for stainless steel industry associations including the Nickel Institute, IMOA, and Specialty Steel Industry of North America. Catherine is on the steering committee for the AISC Design Guide: Structural Stainless Steel; the Nickel Institute USGC representative; and a member of ASM International, Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), ASTM committees E60, A1.17, A1.05; ACI; and CRSI.

Dan Fitzwilliam is a technology leader in the T.Y. Lin International's Big Bridge Line of Business. In his 17 years of bridge design experience, he has worked consistently towards becoming a technical expert in the analysis and design of the most complex aspects of bridge projects. He has experience working in nearly all bridge types including segmental; cable-stayed; suspension; stress ribbon; steel arches, and concrete arches. Recently, Dan has designed two signature pedestrian bridges utilizing stainless steel for key structural elements.

Michael Perkins possess over 30 years of experience in manufacturing management, quality systems, heavy industrial manufacturing, ASME design, metallurgical consulting, welding applications, plant & process automation, and cost reduction programs. AMECO USA provided the major HSLA steel and duplex stainless steel fabrications for the stay cable bridge suspension components for the San Diego Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge as well as fabrications for numerous other stay cable bridge projects over the past 15 years. One other AMECO project of note was the Maumee River Crossing I-480 interstate bridge in Toledo, Ohio–at the time of construction, the largest single project in ODOT 's history.
