A provision to make railroad bridge inspection reports public will make its way to the White House for the president's signature. The provision follows an investigation into the condition of the Canadian Pacific railroad bridge in Milwaukee, Wis.
The investigation exposed corroded support columns and that those inspection reports had been kept private by railroad companies.
"The public has a right to know, especially city leaders, and we need to be able to insist upon repairs when necessary," Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin said in a statement.
The provision would require that railroad companies turn over their most recent inspection reports to the federal government. The new provision has now been included in the transportation bill moving through Congress.
