Stay up to date with construction of the Kentucky Lake Bridge project with EarthCam's live video feed.
Construction started less than three years ago on the $2.3 billion Ohio River Bridges project between Indiana and Kentucky, and come Saturday, the first of the two bridges, the Abraham Lincoln Bridge, will be open to pedestrians to cross. Vehicular traffic will be able to use the bridge before the end of the year.
The new Lincoln portion of the bridges project includes a new cable-stayed bridge, an improved Kennedy Bridge and interstate connections on both sides of the river.
When the new bridge opens, the Kennedy will be closed for upgrading. The revamped Kennedy, which is more than 50 years old, is scheduled to reopen in late 2016. The revamped Kennedy will carry I-65 southbound traffic, and the new bridge will carry northbound I-65 traffic.
The next expected milestone will be paving of the bridge deck, to prepare the bridge to be open to two-way traffic in December. Lanes of I-65 North will first shift to the new bridge. A couple of weeks later, lanes of I-65 South will shift.
