The Indiana Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that construction of the Milton-Madison Bridge has reached completion. The final touches of painting were finished as of Nov. 6, and all traffic controls have been removed from the bridge.
The project broke ground in late 2010, and the new structure made history in April 2014 when the nearly half-mile span became the longest bridge in North America to be slid into place. The new bridge replaces the original bridge which first opened to traffic in 1929. Because of the innovative bridge slide, traffic was maintained across the Ohio River between Madison, Ind. and Milton, Ky. for all but 41 days of the construction period.
The Milton-Madison Bridge Project was a joint effort between IDOT and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and has received numerous awards, including top honors for innovation by the Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
