Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge—Savanna, Ill., and Sabula, Iowa

An inspection of an 86-year-old bridge connecting the communities of Savanna, Ill., and Sabula, Iowa, identified structural deficiencies that required $8 million in repairs and an eight-month full closure. A project study recommended a new bridge be built 100 ft south of the existing structure. Construction on the new bridge began in October 2015, and the finished $80.6 million product, dubbed the Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge, opened to traffic in November 2017.
