Iowa's Lansing Bridge Permanently Closes

Feb. 28, 2024
Close comes after movement was detected from the 93-year-old bridge

Iowa's Lansing Bridge that crosses the Mississippi River remains closed after an inspection by the Iowa Department of Transportation (IowaDOT) showed that the structure moved over the weekend.

The bridge was closed Sunday afternoon by Iowa DOT officials after detecting what they described "some slight movement" of the 93-year-old bridge.

A message posted on the Iowa DOT Lansing Bridge Project page said that they confirmed after an inspection Monday morning the bridge moved.

"Engineers from IowaDOT and other agencies are currently investigating to see exactly what is happening, including determining if construction of the new bridge played a part in the movement." read the statement.

People wishing to cross between Iowa and Wisconsin either have to go down to cross at Prairie du Chien to the south or La Crosse to the north.

Both Iowa and Wisconsin are splitting the cost of a new bridge over the river after federal funding. Work has already begun on the new bridge next to the current one.

The bridge is slated for completion in 2026.
