The Nebraska Department of Transportation is administering another round of its County Bridge Match Program to help localities maintain safe, reliable bridges.

About 74% of Nebraska’s bridges spanning over 20 feet are on the county road system and more than 19% of these structures are rated in poor condition, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

“The current condition of Nebraska’s rural bridges impedes personal and commercial travel which is critical to the safety and prosperity of our citizens,” NDOT said.

The department is offering $4 million to counties for the replacement or repair of structurally deficient bridges. The state match program funds 55% or up to $500,000 of construction costs.

NDOT started accepting proposals on Sept. 1. Eligible bridges must be in poor condition or have a low load rating, be longer than 20 feet and located on a roadway classified as a local road or above.

A map of eligible and previously selected bridges can be found here.

The application period closes on Oct. 17. Chosen structures must be completed by Dec. 31, 2028. Participating counties maintain local control of the project by using local consultants and contractors.

Nebraska’s County Bridge Match Program is now in its 10th round. Since its creation in 2016, it has renewed or replaced 385 bridges by awarding over $34 million to counties.

“Rural transportation provides essential mobility and connectivity for many Nebraskans who rely on safe and efficient roads to deliver agricultural, energy, manufactured and other industry goods to market,” NDOT said. “Many rural communities depend on these bridges for vital connections, and the program has provided essential funding to ensure their longevity and safety.”
