Major construction is now underway on the Interstate 5 Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle, with northbound traffic reduced to two lanes through Aug. 15 as part of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) Revive I-5: Ship Canal Bridge Preservation project.

The $203 million project targets critical repairs on one of the state’s busiest freeway segments, which sees nearly 240,000 vehicles daily.

Built in the 1960s, the bridge last underwent significant preservation work more than 40 years ago. Since 2019, crews have conducted over 200 emergency repairs, highlighting the need for long-term improvements.

Starting this week, contractor Atkinson Construction began resurfacing up to 20% of the northbound bridge deck, repairing five expansion joints and upgrading drainage infrastructure.

To accommodate traffic, I-5 express lanes will operate 24/7 in the northbound direction until Aug. 18. Southbound I-5 drivers will lose express lane access during morning commutes and should expect delays or adjust travel plans accordingly.

From Aug. 15–18, all northbound I-5 lanes between Interstate 90 and Northeast 45th Street will fully close to allow removal of the work zone. All lanes will reopen early Aug. 18.

Additional construction, including southbound lane reductions, will take place in late 2025 and 2027.

Work will pause during the 2026 FIFA World Cup to minimize disruptions. WSDOT urges drivers to plan ahead, expect regional impacts, and consider alternate routes or transit options.
