Texas’ Harbor Bridge Opens to the Public

Structure is expected to reduce congestion and support economic growth

After nearly a decade of planning and construction, the new Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, TX officially opened this weekend, marking a major milestone for the region’s infrastructure and maritime economy.

The $1.2 billion structure replaces the original 1950s-era Harbor Bridge, which suffered from safety issues and limited navigational clearance, according to a report from Kristv.com.

The new bridge spans 1,661 feet and now holds the title of the longest cable-stayed bridge in the United States. It features a modern design with white cables anchored to a soaring central pylon—creating both a freight corridor and a striking South Texas landmark.

Designed to enhance access to the Port of Corpus Christi, the bridge will accommodate larger vessels, including crude oil tankers and container ships, increasing the port’s competitiveness along the Gulf Coast.

Construction began in 2016, but the project faced numerous delays. Originally slated for completion in 2020 with a $900 million budget, the timeline was pushed back due to safety reviews, permitting issues, and weather delays, according to Kristv.com.

In 2019, TxDOT paused design work following safety concerns involving engineering firm FIGG Group, which had been linked to a deadly bridge collapse in Florida, according to Kristv.com.

Despite the challenges, the bridge is now ready to welcome traffic. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this weekend, with the southbound lanes into Corpus Christi opening immediately afterward. Northbound lanes are expected to open in early July.

Officials say the bridge is expected to reduce congestion, improve freight flow and support future economic growth in the region.
