More lanes on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge are set to close this summer as Kentucky and Indiana transportation officials move forward with a $6.9 million renovation project.
The Kennedy Bridge, which carries southbound Interstate 65 over the Ohio River between Louisville and southern Indiana, is undergoing major repairs to replace its expansion joints. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said the left lane and shoulder are already closed as part of preliminary work, and more closures are expected once full construction begins in mid-July.
Built between 1961 and 1963, the bridge has seen increased maintenance needs in recent years. Earlier this year, damaged expansion joints on the Indiana approach led to the closure of three lanes in February. Temporary repairs allowed those lanes to reopen in early April, but long-term fixes are still needed.
Hall Contracting has been awarded the construction contract, which includes replacing aging and damaged expansion joints that help the bridge adjust to temperature changes and movement.
Transportation officials urge drivers to prepare for delays throughout the project’s duration, which is scheduled to be completed by April 2026.
Officials say the improvements will extend the life of the 60-year-old bridge and improve safety for the thousands of vehicles that cross it daily.
