Future of Ballard Bridge in Focus as Repairs and Study Progress

May 13, 2025
Aim is to modernize the structure and assess replacement options

The Ballard Bridge and a stretch of 15th Avenue Northwest in Seattle were closed to vehicle traffic over the weekend as crews performed critical repairs on one of Seattle’s oldest and most heavily used spans.p

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) said the work is part of a multi-phase project aimed at preserving the 107-year-old structure and preparing for its future.

The weekend closure, which lasted from Friday evening through early Monday, allowed crews to make structural improvements, including concrete repairs and the replacement of worn metal expansion joints. While the bridge remained open to pedestrians and bicyclists for most of the weekend, temporary safety-related closures affected all users at times.

The work is part of SDOT’s ongoing Ballard Bridge Planning Study, a comprehensive effort to evaluate the condition of the aging bridge and plan for long-term investments. The study is exploring options for rehabilitation, modernization and eventual replacement.

It also seeks to address safety concerns, traffic capacity and multimodal connections.

To minimize disruptions, SDOT is scheduling construction over weekends, with additional closures planned through mid-June and possible backup dates in July. Detours direct most drivers to the Aurora Bridge (State Route 99), while local traffic may use the Fremont Bridge.

Bus routes that normally cross the Ballard Bridge were rerouted over the weekend, and SDOT is advising riders to expect similar service adjustments during future closures.

More information on upcoming work and public engagement opportunities related to the Ballard Bridge Planning Study can be found on SDOT’s website.
