Texas DOT Postpones Brazos River Project

The transportation agency is looking to reschedule construction

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) had to postpone a major construction project on the U.S. 59 bridge in Sugar Land that was scheduled to begin this week. The land underneath the bridge is eroding due to the Brazos River flooding.

The plan was to reconstruct part of the bridge to keep it stable. The project would take 38 months to complete.

According to TXDOT, the project is designed to help stop erosion under the bridge, saving neighborhoods that are constantly being flooded.

The $53 million project would move the highway bridge and frontage roads north by 1,000 feet.

The project also calls for armoring, which is adding a metal protective barrier, to minimize erosion and eliminate the Brazos River turnaround, a U-turn under the bridge that began crumbling years ago because of the flooding.

In a social media post, TXDOT said they were working on a rescheduling date for the project. It is unclear why the project was postponed.
