Gordie Howe Bridge Opening Date in flux

Dec. 7, 2023
The official reopening date remains 2024, but another official has cast doubt.

The official opening date of the Gordie Howe International Bridge remains late 2024, however officials for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) recently said construction delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could push back the deadline.

Stephanie Campeau, director, stakeholder and community relations for the WDBA recently told the Detroit News that WDBA is having ongoing conversations with Bridging North America, the ad-hoc group of firms construction the bridge, about the delay.

"During the pandemic, they did start moving things around. There have been ongoing discussions about what that actually means for the remainder of the construction,'' Campeau said in a statement. "It is likely that there may be some movement in that originally anticipated opening at the end of 2024."

Campeau is the latest official to cast doubt on the 2024 opening date. Late last year, the head of Bridging North America, Michael Hatchell, said he expected the project to be done in 2025.
