Gordie Howe Bridge Making Progress

The structure is expected to be complete in 2025

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, the $4.5 billion project that will connect the United States and Canada, is making real strides in progress.

Named after the Canadian hockey player, installation of stay cables on the new structure began in January.

On the bridge project, 108 will be placed on each side, for a total of 216 to be installed according to a press release from the project's websiteThe release said that a stay cable is comprised of rope-like metal strands housed in a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic pipe. The metal strands inside the pipe are stressed and anchored to two points: an anchor box inside the tower and an edge girder on the deck.

The cables will deliver the weight of the entire bridge to the towers and maintain the stability of the bridge deck.

The towers and stay cables will be capable of supporting millions of pounds of weight.

The bridge tower legs are 550 feet, with the towers, once completed, to reach 722 feet. The towers are expected to be complete this year.

The structure will connect drivers from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario.

Officials expect the bridge to be complete in 2025.
