In order to complete the new Jacoby Creek Bridge, crews are closing U.S. 101 South near the end of July.
According to Caltrans District 1, Southbound U.S. 101 between Arcata and Eureka at the new Jacoby Creek Bridge will be fully closed on July 22 from 11 P.M. to 5 A.M. Saturday, July 23. This section of the highway will close again on July 23 from 8 P.M. to 6 A.M. on Sunday, July 24.
Travelers are being encouraged to use Route 255 during the closings.
Travelers have been driving over a temporary detour bridge while construction happened on the new bridge. The upcoming road closures will allow crews to move the new bridge to its permanent location.
The old Jacoby Creek Bridge was built in the 1920s and finally reached the end of its “useful life,” according to Caltrans. The new bridge will have a taller deck height and larger surface area than the previous bridge. It is part of the Eureka-Arcata Route 101 Corridor Improvement Project, which is a project improving the 6-mile-long segment of Highway 101.
Drivers can expect at least five-minute delays on southbound U.S. 101 in the hours surrounding the closures.
