Beam placement in progress for new I-20 bridge in Jackson, Mississippi

Dec. 4, 2020

This is the first time the Mississippi DOT has used an SPMT lifting frame

Crews are continuing to make headway on beam placement for the new I-20 bridge in Jackson, Mississippi after erecting a self-propelled modular transport (SPMT) lifting frame at the site of the bridge replacement project.

This is the first time the Mississippi DOT (MDOT) has used an SPMT lifting frame and features the longest pre-stressed simple span the department has ever used. The 170-ft concrete beams weigh roughly 204,000 lb each. Crews will continue placing the remaining large concrete beams over the railroad upon arrival.

The $42.2 million bridge construction project was awarded to Key LLC of Madison. Work began on the I-20 eastbound bridge replacement project in March and is expected to be complete by summer 2022. The bridge spans U.S. Highway 51, I-55 south, and Canadian National/Illinois Central Railroad (ICRR).

According to MDOT, the new bridge is being built on a new alignment to keep closures to a minimum during construction. Once complete, the existing bridge will be demolished.

Additional work includes slide repairs, slope stabilization along the ICRR, and traffic sensor installations within Hinds and Rankin counties. Crews will also widen the roadway along I-20 eastbound and U.S. 51 north for the new bridge alignment.
