Baltimore Metro reopens three days ahead of schedule

March 9, 2018

MDOT MTA is offering free rides to passengers to celebrate the early reopening of the Metro SubwayLink system

After replacing necessary rails on the Metro SubwayLink system, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has reopened the Metro line as of 5 a.m. on Friday, March 9.

The subway was shut down Feb. 11, and reopened three days ahead of schedule. The shutdown was due to the discovery of unexpected wear that could have caused derailment found on 11 sections of the track.

Inspections of rail work by the Federal Transit Administration and State Safety Oversight inspectors allowed for the reopening. The inspections were completed by geometry car testing, an automated testing vehicle.

Passengers on Metro SubwayLink will ride free of charge from March 9 through March 11. The MDOT MTA is still set to complete additional rail work in the summer.
