No. 10 - I-85 Yadkin River Bridge Design-Build

Dec. 15, 2014

The new dual bridges span a wetland, river and three

railroad tracks. To maximize effi ciency of the bridge

design, the team chose a modifi ed 77-in.-deep bulb-tee,

prestressed concrete girder for all concrete spans. To

eliminate the need for bridge overhang falsework, the

team implemented a special “edge girder” that also served

as the formwork for the deck slab overhang. The team

discovered by slightly widening the median of the bridge

to 70 ft that a single work bridge could be constructed in

the center median, reducing project cost, timeframe and

environmental impacts.
