The American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is supporting the National Forensic League during the 2012-13 school year, helping students to talk transportation.
More than 30,000 junior and senior high school students from more than 2,000 schools affiliated with the National Forensic League, which is the national high school speech and debate honor society, will focus this year on the significant issue of transportation infrastructure investment in the U.S.
"Working to support the National Forensic League in this year's national policy debate is critically important for transportation organizations interested in the long-term future of our nation's infrastructure program," said AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley. "The students who tackle this difficult topic are likely to be our future leaders and decision makers."
The National Forensic League’s annual policy debate topic asks whether the U.S. federal government should substantially increase its transportation infrastructure investment. Students will research and debate the issue at local, state, regional and national competitions.
AASHTO has built a constantly updated web page that will serve as an informational resource for students interested in learning more about infrastructure investment (available at nfl.transportation.org). In addition, AASHTO will provide judges and guest speakers for special events throughout the school year.
"We strongly encourage our member states to contact their local National Forensic League chapters to inquire about opportunities to partner with and support the students who will be tackling one of the most challenging issues facing our industry," said Horsley.
