TxDOT Reports Failing Asphalt on Newly Constructed Roads

Sept. 24, 2024
The first three inches of road will need to be removed and replaced

Two roads in downtown Denton, Texas may close after the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reported failing asphalt.

On Sept. 12, the city of Denton announced that TxDOT finished construction on the Square approximately two weeks early after Locust Street and Elm Street were closed for renovations.

TxDOT conducted wear testing on the new asphalt and determined it would need to continue construction, according to Denton Spokesperson Dustin Sternbeck.

The top three inches of asphalt will be removed and replaced, so it should be a short turnaround, according to Sternbeck.

The same streets will close again, but the project will still be completed by the end of September as originally scheduled, according to TxDOT.

Denton’s capital projects staff was informed by TxDOT of the testing results on Friday.

The city asked TxDOT to complete the project before Oct. 1 because of several events scheduled next month.

The streets originally closed on Aug. 26 for construction and was expected to finish construction on Sept. 30.
