ROADS/BRIDGES: TxDOT awards contract for southern gateway project in Dallas

The department awarded a joint venture to reconstruct and improve the I-35E and U.S. 67 interchange
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) hired general contractor Balfour Beatty in a joint venture with Fluor Corp. for a $625 million roadway reconstruction and improvement project along I-35E and U.S. 67 at the southern gateway of Dallas.
The 11-mile project will expand I-35E from four lanes to five lanes in each direction, with plans to build two reversible, non-toll express lanes in the center of the thoroughfare. The interchange will also be improved by rebuilding the I-35E and U.S. 67 interchange and widening U.S. 67 from I-35E and I-20 by adding a third lane in each direction.
By upgrading the roadway with this project, TxDOT officials say they hope it will improve roadway safety, relieve traffic congestion and improve the freeway linkage in the region.
The project is being funded through TxDOT's Texas Clear Lanes initiative, which prioritizes funding based on needed congestion relief at projects throughout the Lone Star state. It is expected to improve the traffic flow for an estimated 180,000 motorists in southern Dallas County.
Construction is slated to start in late 2017, with completion expected in 2021.
