Construction for nearly 17 miles of poles and tolls is scheduled to begin Sunday night along the northern stretch of Interstate 95 in Broward County, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
The $303 million Express Lanes project extends two toll lanes in each direction from north of Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale to just south of Southwest 10th Street in Deerfield Beach.
The state agency held a public information open house Tuesday evening at the FDOT District Four auditorium in Fort Lauderdale to explain how construction will impact traffic on an already busy highway.
According to state transportation officials, the project will include converting the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes to create two express lanes. Old asphalt will be removed and the lanes and shoulders will be repaved, while mainline overpasses on the interstate will be widened. Ramp signals will be installed at northbound and southbound on-ramps between Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Sample Road.
In addition, Intelligent Transportation System traffic cameras, message boards, tolling equipment, lane poles and overhead signs will be installed around the new express lanes.
Noise barrier walls will be erected along several residential areas including southbound I-95 between Broward Boulevard and Northwest Sixth Street, northbound I-95 between Powerline Road and Commercial Boulevard, northbound I-95 between Atlantic Boulevard and Sample Road, and southbound I-95 just north of Sample Road.
Toll lane construction is scheduled to complete by winter 2020.
