Sixteen companies will design and build the $100 million I-270 project in Montgomery County

A design-build team made up of 16 companies has been selected for the $100 million I-270 Innovative Congestions Management Project in Montgomery County, Md.—a project designed to cut 30 minutes off of morning commutes from Frederick to I-495.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced the plan last summer for the corridor that sees 79,400 vehicles each day on the north end and 261,200 vehicles per day on the end near I-495, also known as the Capital Beltway.

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) says the project will address 14 bottlenecks, add 23 lane miles, at least 25 “real-time” traffic communication signs and 30 intelligent signals that “work together to deliver dynamic traffic management along the entire I-270 corridor.”

MDOT reports the final design is in progress and construction will begin in the fall, with the project to be completed in 2019.
