Dr. Hassan Tabatabaee
Global Technology Manager for Asphalt Solutions, Cargill
Dr. Tabatabaee is the Global Technology Manager for Asphalt Solutions at Cargill’s Bioindustrial Group, a multinational producer of specialty chemicals for bituminous paving and emulsion systems. He has a PhD degree in Bituminous Materials and Engineering, and MS and BS degrees in Civil Engineering. His publications and patents focus on bitumen chemistry, rheological and analytical characterization, and micromechanical models for bitumen distress mechanisms, aging, recycling, and rejuvenation.
Dr. Tabatabaee has contributed to numerous state and federal research projects on various aspects of pavement materials, specifications, and engineering, including the FHWA Asphalt Research Consortium, and other studies. Currently, he is the PI for the upcoming NRRA Innovation Project on use of rejuvenators in Cold-in-Place Recycling; and a subcontractor to the NRRA Innovation Project, led by the University of New Hampshire. A member of numerous professional industry organizations, Dr. Tabatabaee has also been an active contributor to the FHWA Expert Task Group Task Force on RAP and RAS AASHTO Specifications, and the RILEM TC on Recycled Materials.
Raymond (“Buzz”) Powell
Assistant Director and Test Track Manager, National Center for Asphalt Technology at Auburn University
Buzz earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Auburn University with an emphasis in pavements and geomaterials. He worked for 12 years with the Alabama DOT in pavement testing, pavement management, construction testing, pavement research, and materials characterization. He worked for 2 years in private practice consulting in highway construction, with a focus on testing pavements for quality control and quality assurance. He became NCAT’s Test Track Manager in 1999. He has now been responsible for building/rebuilding the NCAT Pavement Test Track 7 times and safely applying over 67 million ESALs of pavement damage to hundreds of experimental pavements. He became an Assistant Director at NCAT in 2007.
Vice President of Business Development, Midstate Reclamation and Trucking
Dan Schellhammer is vice president of business development with Midstate Reclamation and Trucking in Lakeville, Minnesota. A professional engineer registered in the state of Minnesota, Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Throughout his career in the asphalt industry, Dan has worked on innumerable projects that involve recycled asphalt pavement. Prior to his tenure with Midstate, which recently reached seven years, he worked for national bridge contractor Edward Kraemer & Sons. He is a member of Minnesota Governor Walz's Sustainable Transportation Advisory Council, and co-chair of the Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association's full-depth reclamation committee.
Hot Mix Supervisor, Delaware Department of Transportation
Shane has worked at the Delaware Department of Transportation Materials & Research Lab for almost 31 years. He started working in the Soils Lab while attending Delaware Tech, where he received an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering. Shane transferred to the Hot Mix section in 1995, and for the last 21 years served as Supervisor. The section includes Delaware DOT hot mix inspectors and research lab. Notably, Delaware is one of the few states that still have state employees testing hot mix for payment. Shane has been part of many innovations while working at Del DOT, from the implementation of SuperPave to the development of SMA, high rap and shingle mixes, rejuvenators, ground rubber and now performance testing. He currently performs APA, Ideal-CT and Texas Overlay testing on Del DOT approved mixes. As for now, the information collected is used for data building, so that the agency can implement a performance spec in the near future.
