Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser pushes for an additional 342 speed cameras district wide to improve traffic safety.
"In the last two years the Council has approved 342 new cameras related to vision zero initiatives," Bowser said on Wednesday, during the Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Proposal meeting.
A proposed renewal budget of $7.4 million would go to the cameras alone with $13.3 million being added to support BMV handling of increased ticket management. But Bowser says that these spendings are necessary.
"This is what I believe. We don't really – really – want to collect a dollar from those cameras" she said. "We want people to stop at red lights, stay out of bus lanes, don't run stop signs, and stop driving recklessly in our city. That's what we want."
These spending measures would be keeping with the to Vision Zero Initiatives, aiming to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safety, mobility, and equity for all road users.
Mayor Bowser also promises to enlist a task force to monitor the effects of the additional placements of the speed cameras saying that its not only going to look at issues of placement but equity and the number of fines that come out of the change in traffic safety.
The District’s Mayor’s office also will be deploying $19 million a year to encourage temporary and permanent traffic calming measures, with $3.6 million a year going towards improvements around schools.
