ROADS/BRIDGES: Oregon finally takes the road-charge plunge

June 1, 2015

State testing voluntary mileage-based system—the first in the U.S.

After years of development, the state of Oregon is ready for divulgement when it comes to the first cost-per-mile system in the U.S.

Known as MyOreGo, the program will be voluntary and any personal information on drivers will be sealed.

Drivers who sign up will be charged 1.5 cents per mile for trips that happen on Oregon roads. Either a GPS system or mileage counters of cars will be used to track travel, or in exchange drivers will receive a tax credit reimbursing them for their 31-cent-per-gallon Oregon gas tax. No more than 5,000 cars will be tracked initially.

The money gathered will be used to address road and bridge needs across the state.
