Homeland Security seeking applications for infrastructure-protection grants

The federal Department of Homeland Security announced it is seeking applications for grants to help states, local governments and agencies protect vital public infrastructure. There was $459 million for such grants provided through the department's appropriation for FY 2007.

Grant applications will be accepted through March 6 for proposals that increase security of ports, transit systems including commuter, light and heavy rail and intra-city bus and ferry systems, or intercity bus systems.

Applications also will be accepted for intercity passenger rail security (Amtrak), for security in the trucking industry (through the American Trucking Associations) and for the "buffer zone protection program" that creates a perimeter around critical infrastructure or key resources.
