An asphalt contractor in South Carolina is using one of the first Super 700 pavers from Vögele America Inc. to pave roads, shoulders and patches and do commercial work.

To do patching work for the South Carolina Department of Transportation, TB Bulldozing Inc., Aiken, S.C., has teamed the new paver with a Wirtgen W 2000 cold mill and a Hamm HD O90V asphalt compactor.

"We are using the W 2000 and the little Super 700 to do full-depth, 6-ft 6-in. [79-in.] x 6-in.-deep patching for the South Carolina DOT," said owner Tommy Baggott. TB Bulldozing was patching sections of Winterwood Road in Richland County north of Columbia, S.C., where cuts totaling 1,300 sq yd had been marked out by the DOT.

Baggott was patching with mix from TB's own plant, a 350-tph plant making an intermediate binder mix, to be topped with a Surface C mix as a leveling course.

The patching mix was being placed in two 3-in. lifts, 6 ft 6 in. wide.

Baggott was impressed by the versatility of equipment on the jobsite. "[The paver] goes into our 6-6 cuts, but also will sit in a 4-ft trench and pave," he said. "You can get right next to a building and pave because each separate hopper leaf works individually and independently. On conventional pavers both hopper sides will come up at the same time when you hit the lever."

The Super 700 already has done duty on parking lots, working through tight areas there; building up 4-ft-wide shoulders; but also has been home on DOT paving projects. Baggott also has fine-tuned his Super 700 to do widening.
