The 2008 National Work Zone Awareness Week kick-off event will be held April 8 on the steps of the California State Capitol Building in Sacramento. This is the first time in the nine year history of National Work Zone Awareness Week that the kick-off event will take place outside of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. In Sacramento, a CALTRANS honor guard will pay tribute to all highway workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. AGC chapters around the country will also be holding events next week in cooperation with their state DOTs.
AGC of Iowa is a sponsor of the Iowa DOT's Sweet Ride promotion. This creative website (http://www.sweetridecontest.com) includes many unique features and takes advantage of technologies popular with the 14-24 age group and was featured during AGC's Highway and Transportation Division meeting at the Las Vegas Convention. It is still available to view. To entice young motorists to visit the site, a 2008 Ford Focus will be given way during Work Zone Awareness Week. Tobe eligible to win the car, contestants must watch an online educational video about work zone safety issues and successfully complete a short quiz offered. More than 11,000 visitors logged on to the website to learn about work zone safety and safe driving in general with about 18,000 views of the video. The original goal was 2,000.
