MACTEC Engineering & Consulting (MACTEC E&C), Alpharetta, Ga., is currently working on a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) roadway and bridge improvement project that will improve the hurricane evacuation route for the Florida Keys along U.S. Highway 1 in Monroe County, Fla.
Bruce C. Coles, president of MACTEC E&C and chairman and CEO of MACTEC Inc., the holding company, recently made the announcement.
According to MACTEC Senior Vice President and South Florida Area Manager Richard A. Minichiello, the firm is partnering with Metric Engineering in providing a wide variety of engineering services for FDOT's Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) project (the CEI team is inspecting $52 million of construction projects). The CEI contract includes contract administration, inspection and materials sampling and testing for at least 12 construction projects in the Florida Keys.
Some significant projects include rigid pavement rehabilitation, bridge superstructure and substructure rehabilitation and drainage improvements. MACTEC will be providing a project engineer, senior bridge inspector, senior roadway inspector and two roadway inspection team members.
"We're pleased to be part of the team that is working together to improve bridge superstructure and roadways in the Florida Keys," Minichiello said. "Because the project spans a string of bridge--connected islands south of Miami there are unique challenges during construction--adjacent ocean waters, protected mangroves, a key deer sanctuary, turtle nesting grounds and the Florida Keys National Marine sanctuary."
