No. 9 - I-65/I-70 South Split Reconstruction

Dec. 2, 2014

The Split required the removal of 60,800 sq yd of existing

asphalt and concrete pavements and 72,000 cu yd of excavation.

During the removal phase, an area of soft subgrade

was discovered in the southbound lanes between Fletcher

Avenue and Calvary Street bridges. Widening and lowering

the road called for the existing slopes to be re-cut to match

the new road grade. The slopes were much steeper than

anticipated, and the solution called for the use of rip-rap

to keep the slope in place.
