HIGHWAY 1 RECONSTRUCTION

PROJECT: Highway 1 Reconstruction

LOCATION: Ely, Minn.

COST: $7.15 million

DESIGNER: Minnesota DOT, District 1

CONTRACTOR: Ulland Bros. Inc.

OWNER: Minnesota DOT, District 1

It’s tough to harvest the rock garden of a giant. This is the challenge of Ulland Bros. Inc., as large quantities of ledge rock and many huge boulders, some larger than school buses, have had to be removed. This project also will reduce the severity of bumps and dips in the road and soften the existing tight curves. Environmental restraints for the job placed the new alignment in an extremely tight corridor, and numerous swamps had to be excavated and back?lled.
