The Roads & Bridges Lightning Round

Show off your roads, bridges and civil engineering expertise in our bimonthly game show for rising industry talent.

You think you’re smart? Prove it! Take your shot at the Roads & Bridges’ Lightning Round, a bimonthly game show for college students majoring in engineering and young professionals who have not yet earned their professional engineer license.

We’re breaking it down into phases: Most road and bridge construction projects are organized into distinct phases, and our game show is no different. Phase 1 is at the beginning of the month; Phase 2 and Phase 3 are at the end of the month, recorded together during the same Zoom call.

During Phase 1, a group of contestants (10-15 people) meet host Gavin Jenkins on a Zoom call. The video call is recorded as contestants are asked 10 questions. The questions will pertain to engineering as well as road and bridge trivia. When the dust settles, the two contestants with the best score advance to Phase 2.

In the month’s second episode, those top two contestants square off in Phase 2. Jenkins will ask them five questions, and the first to answer three correctly advances to Phase 3 — the Roads & Bridges’ Lightning Round.

This contestant is given 60 seconds to answer as many questions correctly as they can.

The recorded episodes will then be published on Roads & Bridges’ website.

The Roads & Bridges’ Lightning Round will have two divisions: College Students and Young Professionals.

And to the victors go the spoils: Each month’s Runner-Up will be featured in a Q&A on Roads & Bridges’ website, and the month’s Winner will be featured on an episode of the Infrastructure Technology Podcast.

Each month’s Winner and Runner-Up also will be given the opportunity to join some of the industry’s most influential thought leaders by writing an opinion article in an upcoming issue of Roads & Bridges.

(Not everyone is a writer, so this is not mandatory.)

To be eligible to participate, you must fall into one of these categories: a college student majoring in engineering or a recent college graduate with an engineering degree who has not yet earned a professional engineer license.
