The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reached a major milestone in its performance by meeting or exceeding all on-time and on-budget project performance goals for fiscal year 2007. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reached a major milestone in its performance by meeting or exceeding all on-time and on-budget project performance goals for fiscal year 2007. It marks the first time in the agency’s history that all of those targets were met or exceeded. The results were released Sept. 19 as part of the department’s quarterly report issued to the Commonwealth Transportation Board.

For the fiscal year, 80% of all construction and maintenance contracts were completed both on schedule and within budget. The agency also surpassed the statewide construction quality compliance goal with a 91.9% rating.

VDOT has significantly improved its project performance since initial performance reporting began in 2001. At that time, 20% of construction contracts were completed on time and 51% of construction contracts were completed within budget. Thirty-eight percent of maintenance contracts were completed on time and 59% of maintenance contracts were completed within budget.

“I am proud to report that VDOT this year exceeded all it performance targets, and I attribute our success to a more deliberate focus on project management and improved collaboration with our contractors and the localities,” said Commissioner David S. Ekern. “Starting this fiscal year, we will take performance reporting to a new level by adding customer satisfaction, financial accountability, safety and VDOT management measures–making our business even more transparent to our stakeholders, particularly Virginia’s taxpayers.”
