TRANSIT: SFMTA awarded $45 million toward 10 new trains for future fleet

Aug. 22, 2016

The new trains for Muni's fleet come from a grant in California's cap-and-trade fund

Ten new trains will bolster Muni’s fleet thanks to a $45 million grant from California’s cap-and-trade fund.

More than 40 agencies applied for the funds, 14 of which were awarded, according to the California State Transportation Agency.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has 64 trains on the way to expand its fleet, 32 of which are already funded.

The new vehicles are also expected to deliver 963,000 tons of greenhouse gas reductions over the life of the vehicles, according to SFMTA.

The $19.5 million the SFMTA Board of Directors approved will go toward modifying the new fleet during production. Those changes include featuring colored signage for different lines, charging stations for hand radios, Siemens diagnostic software and integration with Muni’s recently upgraded communications system.

Those 24 new trains will be a part of Muni’s future fleet from manufacturer Siemens Industry Inc., and are additional procurements to the original 215 trains SFMTA ordered.

Some of those vehicles are already in Siemens’ Sacramento facility, according to SFMTA, and will begin revenue service in The City in late 2017.
