TRANSIT SAFETY: 29 people sent to hospital following Amtrak derailment

An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed in southwest Kansas, injuring 29

At least 29 people have been taken to the hospital following an Amtrak train derailment in southwest Kansas. According to a statement, the train was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago when it derailed approximately 20 miles west of Dodge City, Kan.

Kansas Highway Patrol communication specialist Patricia Munford said five train cars were on their side.

"There were approximately 128 passengers and 14 crew members on board the train that had two locomotives and nine cars," Amtrak said in a statement.

Amtrak said it was working with BNSF, which owns and maintains the track, to investigate the cause of the derailment. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was also sending a team to investigate the incident.
