TRAFFIC SAFETY: NYSDOT and GEICO partner to stop texting while driving

Sept. 12, 2016

The department along with the insurance company are creating Text Stops across the state

Officials with GEICO insurance joined with representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Sept. 1 in opening the first GEICO Text Stop in the state at the Northway rest stop in Clifton Park.

The insurance company will contribute $1.3 million over the next five years to enhance the Text Stop program initiated in 2013 by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Reflective road signs sponsored by GEICO will inform motorists using major state highways that they are approaching a Text Stop. The signs will also include underlying messages to drivers to stop all behavior that contributes to distracted driving and wait for the oncoming rest area.

There are 52 Text Stops throughout the state as a result of the governor’s initiative. GEICO will assist NYSDOT with new signs and, as the original reflective signs age, replace them with new ones bearing not only the words Text Stop but the company’s name.

The signs will announce the stops to motorists using the state’s major highways and let them know how far they are from reaching one.
