Smart traffic signals to be installed on local roads in Gwinnett County, Ga.

May 9, 2018

That technology will allow the county’s traffic control center to interact with traffic signals and cameras along local roads

Gwinnett County commissioners recently approved a four-project partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to install technology which will allow Gwinnett transportation engineers to communicate with traffic signals and cameras on portions of four key corridors in the county.

The smart traffic signal projects will include fiber-optic cable and wireless radio communications installation. That technology will allow the county’s traffic control center to interact with traffic signals and cameras along the roads. The four projects will result in 29.5 miles of fiber-optic cable, 55 new traffic monitoring cameras and communication technology for 31 traffic signals being installed. GDOT will fund most of the project while the county will contribute funds to cover the rest.

The roads—or sections of roads—that are are getting upgraded with smart traffic technology include Ronald Reagan Parkway, from Pleasant Hill Road to S.R. 124; Old Peachtree Road, from Sugarloaf Parkway to Dean Road; SH 316, from S.R. 20 to the Barrow County line; and Five Forks Trickum Road, from Rockbridge Road to Sugarloaf Parkway.

American Lighting and Signalization LLC was awarded the contract to do the work on Ronald Reagan Parkway, Old Peachtree Road and Five Forks Trickum Road. Brooks Berry Haynie & Associates Inc. was awarded the contract for the work on Highway 316.
