ROADS/BRIDGES: Senate committee ready to launch multiyear highway bill

June 23, 2015

Most extensive measure since SAFETEA-LU still has hurdles to clear

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee has unveiled a multiyear highway bill that is being called the most extensive reauthorization since 2005, when SAFETEA-LU was passed. However, few details were announced.

Sens. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) did the honors, and vowed to move the DRIVE Act bill to the House floor quickly, but how to fund the six-year measure will be left up to the Senate Finance Committee. There is about a $90 billion gap not covered by annual federal gas-tax receipts.

The latest extension of MAP-21 expires July 31.
