ROAD CONSTRUCTION: Major road work in New Albany, Ind., to make dangerous intersection safer

July 19, 2016

The project began after a study shows a significant amount of crashes in the area of the intersection

An $800,000 construction project is now underway to turn one of the most dangerous intersections in New Albany, Ind., into a much safer route.

The intersection of Spring Street and Silver Street has been ranked one of the highest prone to accidents in southern Indiana. A recent study shows over a five-year period more than 100 crashes were reported along the small stretch of roadway.

In order to reduce those numbers, exclusive left turn lanes will be added with a new signal. Bike lanes will also be added.

While drivers may lose a lane in that area, it will reduce traffic speeds and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Federal aid will cover 80% of the Spring Street project, which is scheduled for completion in November.
