PCA releases revised edition for design and control of concrete mixtures

May 19, 2011

Concrete is the material of choice for America’s roads, bridges, buildings, dams, and more. Yet, just like our cars, phones and computers, new advancements and technology have created a concrete that is vastly different from the material used even 20 years ago.

To address these changes, the Portland Cement Association (PCA) has issued a new, fully revised 15th edition Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures? The guide to applications, methods, and materials.

As noted in the forward by William F. Baker, P.E., S.E., FIStructE, a partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, “When we use the term concrete today, we are speaking of a material that is very different from the grey materials this is in the mind of the general public. The strength, stiffness, workability and durability of modern concrete has led to expanded uses of the material and new opportunities for design.”

And, just as construction professionals have been doing for the past 85 years, engineers, concrete contractors and specifiers can turn to Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures with confidence. The authoritative reference on cement and concrete materials for decades, the new issue highlights the many advances that have occurred in the past decade while providing a concise, current reference on the fundamentals of concrete technology and construction.

For years, Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures has been used as a reference publication for many national and state certification programs. It provides the most recent standards, specifications, test methods and guides of ASTM International, the American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials, American Concrete Institute, and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.

Backed by more than 95 years of PCA research, Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures addresses the essentials on freshly mixed and hardened concrete, including cements, supplementary cementing materials, aggregates, admixtures, air-entrainment, mixture proportioning, batching, curing, hot- and cold-weather concreting, high-performance concrete, and control tests for quality concrete. Besides presenting a 30% in information compared to the prior edition within the previous chapters, this edition has added four new chapters on concrete sustainability, reinforcement, properties of concrete and durability.

All concrete ingredients (cementing materials, water, aggregates, chemical admixtures and fibers) are reviewed for their optimal use in designing and proportioning concrete mixtures. The use of concrete from design to batching, mixing, transporting, placing, consolidating, finishing, and curing is addressed.
