The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced a change in the keynote speaker for its 47th Annual Convention, March 3-7, at the San Francisco Marriott in San Francisco. The new speaker is Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, U.S. Army, Retired.
"We are very pleased that, in view of our country’s new priorities, we were able to secure Gen. Schwarzkopf to deliver our keynote address," said R. Wayne Evans, NAPA’s 2001 chairman.
Gen. Schwarzkopf, author of the best-selling book It Doesn’t Take a Hero, will share his perspective on the challenges of leadership in difficult times, from the war room to the boardroom and throughout the intricate web of global conflict.
Having received numerous honors for many military accomplishments, including three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Gen. Schwarzkopf’s leadership throughout Desert Shield and Desert Storm makes him an expert on addressing the gravest challenges facing America today. Gen. Schwarzkopf will give attendees a refreshing reminder of what makes America a great land to live in while sharing his outlook on the continuing battle facing our country in the days to come.

NAPA supports the Smithsonian
NAPA has teamed up with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) to make the single, largest-ever association financial commitment to public education by the construction industry.
The two organizations have pledged a combined $2 million to support a state-of-the-art permanent exhibition called "America on the Move" at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. The exhibition is scheduled to open in fall 2003.

Making recommendations
A new report, Recommendations to Congress on the Reauthorization of TEA-21, has been released by NAPA. The 16-page study urges Congress to give careful consideration to the future funding needs of America’s highways.
"The fact is that nearly 90% of all daily and long-distance trips are in an automobile, and funding allocations in the next transportation bill need to reflect that," said Mike Acott, president of NAPA.

Helping victims of Sept. 11 attacks
NAPA joined with three other transportation construction associations in making a donation to the "Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund," which provides financial support for post-secondary education to families who suffered direct losses in the Sept. 11 events.
Members of NAPA, ARTBA, the American Concrete Pavement Association and the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association had planned a legislative fly-in in Washington, D.C., for Sept. 19-20, 2001, but canceled it after the terrorist attacks.
When offered a refund of their registration fee, many NAPA members suggested that the funds be donated to assist the victims. The donation option was presented to all registrants and they responded enthusiastically. In addition to the registration fees, the total of $45,700 in donations included contributions from the four associations.

SMA in the USA II Workshop
For a chance to get up close and personal with stone matrix asphalt (SMA), plan to attend the "SMA in the USA II Workshop" March 25-27 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Frederick, Md.
"SMA in the USA II" will include presentations by top industry figures, plus visits to an SMA paving site and a hot-mix asphalt plant. Sponsors are the Maryland State Highway Administration, Virginia DOT, Federal Highway Administration, International Society for Asphalt Pavements and Asphalt Pavement Alliance.
