A Look at Some of the Major Players on I-15

Utah Department of Transportation

UDOT is the agency responsible for the overall management of this project as part of the General Development Plan. Thomas R. Warne is the executive director. The point man on the project is David G. Downs, I-15 corridor project director.

Wasatch Contractors

Wasatch Contractors is a joint venutre of Kiewit Construction Co., Granite Construction Co. and Washington Construction Co.

Wasatch Contractors

Wasatch Contractors is a joint venutre of Kiewit Construction Co., Granite Construction Co. and Washington Construction Co. The joint venture, formed specifically for the project, also could be responsible for the maintenance option should they be selected by UDOT.

Kiewit Construction Co.

Kiewit will be the managing partner in the joint venture with Granite and Washington. As one of the largest construction firms in the U.S., Kiewit is based in Omaha, Neb. Al Kirkwood leads the executive management team.

Granite Construction Co.

Watsonville, Calif.-based Granite Construction billed over $900 million in new contracts in 1996-97. Dick Lewis from Granite is part of the three-man executive team managing the project.

Washington Construction Co.

Washington Construction Co. is the parent company of Morrison Knudsen Corp. Darrol Groven is Washington's representative on the executive management team.

Penhall Co.

This is the contractor responsible for the demolition of over 100 bridges and 48 buildings on the project. In the past Penhall has completed earthquake emergency work for CalTrans, including the Embarcadero Freeway project.

Sverdrup Civil Inc.

Sverdrup is an international service company engaged in engineering, architecture, construction and facility operations. A four-time winner of the Grand Conceptor award, Sverdrup is headquartered in Maryland Heights, Mo. Bruce Wassell is the design manager in the Salt Lake City office.

DeLeuw, Cather & Co.

This partner of Sverdrup Civil is in charge of the design team. Deleuw, Cather previously worked with Kiewit and Granite on the $750-million San Joaquin toll road in Southern California. The company is a unit of Parsons Corp. in Pasadena, Calif.

URS Greiner Inc.

Another key member of the design team. URS Greiner is headquartered in New York.

The Terracon Cos.

Terracon, based in Lenexa, Kan., specializes in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering and construction materials testing. An employee-owned company, Terracon has over 45 operating locations, with offices in 19 states.

MK Centennial

Another key member of the design team on I-15. MK Centennial is headquartered in Arvada, Colo.

Intergraph Corp.

Intergraph Software Solutions' civil engineering software is being used by about 75 design engineers for the design portion of the project. The Sverdrup/DeLeuw team purchased 300 Intergraph workstations. Technical applications developed by Intergraph include computer-aided design, engineering, analysis, manufacturing and GIS.

HCSS

The company has created Heavy Bid for Windows, a bid/estimating software designed for contractors involved in earthwork, utility, highways, bridges and related construction.

Primavera Systems Inc.

Primavera System's Expedition for Windows is the project management software used by the key players on the project. Expedition is a client/server, project administration solution that controls contract changes and submittals.

Gomaco Corp.

Gomaco Corp., Ida Grove, Iowa, is the manufacturer of concrete paving equipment used on the pavement portion of the project. Purchased by Kiewit, these pavers will be used on the over 2.5 million sq yd of new concrete pavement.

CMI Corp.

CMI Corp. is the manufacturer of the RS 500B reclaimer/stabilizer used by Geneva Rock Products, Orem, Utah. The reclaimer/stabilizer is used to grind and remove the existing shoulder for reconstruction.

West Manitowac

The West Manitowac model 222EX crawler-mounted lattice-boom crane is being used by Kiewit Construction on the I-15 project, as well as projects in Boston, Indonesia and Puerto Rico.

Addco Inc.

The company manufacturers solar changeable message signs. Based in St. Paul, Minn., ADDCO manufactures two models of solar signs: the all LED DH1000 ALS and the LED-DOT sign. They also offer portable traffic light signals powered by solar energy.

Tensar Corp.

Makers of the Sierra Slope Retention System, Tensar provides design and engineering services and products for erosion control, foundation, waterway and retaining wall solutions. Tensar is based in Atlanta. Syro Inc.

Syro is supplying 2-million ft of pipe piling, sheet piling, and safety end treatments.

Modern Alloys Inc. Contractors

This Stanton, Calif.-based contractor is providing slipform concrete safety barriers for traffic separation.

Victor O. Schinnerer & Co.

Providers of design liability insurance to such clients as Sverdrup Civil through CNA.

TransCore

TransCore, Harrisburg, Pa., is the system designer on the Advanced Traffic Management Systems portion of the project. Key components of the ATMS portion include valley-wide traffic signal coordination, highway advisory radio, rapid detection of accidents and traffic control centers.
